What do I need in order to qualify for a green card or permanent residency as a registered nurse?

Nurses are considered to be Schedule A occupations. A nurse may apply for a green card under the EB-3 preference if he/she:

  • has a Commission on Graduates in Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) Certificate,
  • the alien has passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) exam, or
  • the alien holds a full and unrestricted (permanent) license to practice nursing in the state of intended employment.

To qualify for adjustment of status, a nurse also needs to obtain a visa screen certificate. A job offer and employer sponsorship are required.
